Frequently Asked Questions
Two characteristics of carpet are primary considerations when choosing a carpet: the type of natural or synthetic fiber used in the construction, and the pile—how the loops of fiber are attached to the carpet backing. These characteristics determine the comfort of the carpet, how it feels underfoot, and its wear characteristics.
Cut pile is a style of carpet where the exposed fibers are sheared off. This typically produces soft, inviting, easy-to-clean carpets.
loop pile leaves the entire yarn loop intact on the surface of the piece. These carpets tend to be highly durable, easy to clean, and resistant to stains, making them perfect for high-traffic commercial applications or high-traffic family areas, such as recreation rooms. Loop pile carpets also don’t show indentations caused by footprints and vacuum marks.
The most common fibers are Nylon, Polypropylene/Polyester, and Wool. Nylon is soft, durable and stain resistant. Wool is a natural, long lasting and classic carpet fibre. Polypropylene/Polyester carpets are cheaper and have strong stain resistance, but are prone to soiling and flattening, which is why they are often used in loop piles.
Carpetarea is calculated using lineal metres, not square metres. Carpet rolls are usually 3.66m or 4m wide, and are cut to shape and/or joined together for larger rooms. The best way to get an accurate price for carpet is to have someone attend the property or have architectural drawings to work out a laying plan and reduce wastage. Carpet tiles are worked out on m².
Carpet has many great qualities. It is sound absorbing, warm, comfortable, and versatile. There are literally hundreds of carpet styles and colours to pick from, allowing you to tailor your living area to your desire. Carpet provides warmth and comfort, helps absorb noise and can feel fantastic underfoot!
Broadly speaking, carpet fibres fall under 4 categories; Polypropylene, Polyester, Nylon and Wool.
Polypropylene and Polyester carpets are very durable and cost effective. They are stain resistant; however, they are oleophilic – oils and fats cling to the fibres and require professional cleaning. Polypropylene and Polyester carpets also have poor elasticity; once the fibres are pressed down they don’t spring up like other carpets, furniture coasters are recommended. Polypropylene and Polyester carpets are great for properties with a tight budget, commercial or investment properties.
For owner occupied homes, wool & nylon are the most common choices. Nylons are stain resistant, comfortable & durable. Wool carpets are a classic; natural fibres, renown for warmth and comfort; Wool is often the most expensive fibre, but well loved for the quality and the feel.
Carpet comes in two forms: Cut pile and loop pile carpets
Cut pile carpets have the fibers shaved at a specific height to give a consistent, smooth look across the surface. They are comfortable to walk on with bare feet. High density cut pile carpets make them softer and give a more plush feeling when touching the carpet.
Loop pile carpet have the fibers woven into the backing creating a visual effect based on the pattern and the type of loop. Loop pile carpets are more durable and robust to foot traffic and will last longer. Loop piles aren’t as plush underfoot as a cut pile; however with a good quality underlay loop pile carpets can be extremely comfortable to walk on. We have a loop pile carpet in our showroom that is a great demonstration of this – CFC only uses high quality carpet in our installations.
